This 4-lane roadway bridge was constructed over three tracks of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad (BNSF).  The 4-span cast-in-place concrete girder bridge was designed by DMJM Harris AECOM.  Construction of the project, located within an industrial area of the City, required the installation of mechanically stabilized embankment (MSE) walls, extensive traffic detours, utility relocations, and the realignment of several local streets.

Southstar took a proactive approach to address the problems that arose during the construction of the Columbia Avenue Grade Separation project by building strong working relationships with both City personnel and the contractor.

When it appeared that delays in utility relocations would push the contractor’s planned work into the “4th Quarter Shutdown” period required by BNSF, Southstar personnel presented operational changes to the contractor’s work to allow construction to continue during the “Shutdown” period.  These changes, accepted by both the contractor and City, allowed the overall project to be completed two months early.
